A little pioneer

A little pioneer

Not many kids can brag about being pint-sized medical pioneers even before they have blown out their second birthday candles.

Meet Eddie, one of the trailblazing children in the UK whose family dared to explore cannabis medications for treating his Epilepsy. When he was just little, he was one of the first children to be given permission to try a medication called Epidiolex, which contains CBD. It worked a little, but not as much as his parents hoped, so they took him to Holland to try a more advanced cannabis medicine called Bedrolite. At first, they had to sneak it back into the UK illegally, but now they can get it here, albeit at a hefty cost for a private prescription.

Although the medication hasn’t completely tamed Eddie’s epilepsy, it has been his most successful treatment so far and the only one he’s been able to stick with throughout the years.

Today, Eddie is 8 years old and still loves to be the front-runner. He’s never happier than when he’s zooming in his wheelchair, soaring higher than everyone else on the swings, staying active and busy all the time.

To keep him on the move, Eddie needs to keep getting his medication. However, there’s a problem: his UK doctor is retiring this year, and his parents are not sure if they will be able to find another doctor to continue prescribing for him. A medicine that has proven to be safe and effective for him since he was a toddler is about to be snatched away because the UK system is broken.
